Consumer Cell helps in getting
cell phone repaired promptly
By Our Staff Reporter
M. Siva (a resident of MGR
Nagar, Choolai Pallam,
Chennai) purchased a YUG
smart phone for Rs. 8999
recently. However, since the
phone turned out to be
defective, he gave it to the
company for repair. But in
spite of his various calls, visits
and letters, the company kept
the phone for a long time
without repairing and
returning it.
He therefore approached
Rotary Consumer Guidance
Cell (AH 225, AH Block 2nd
Street, 8th Main Road, Anna
Nagar, behind Shanthi
Colony) for help. Himmatmal
Mardia (Chairman) and A.R.
Santhanakrishnan (Secretary) helped him to write a
strongly worded letter to the
company, with a copy made to
the Cell.
In his letter dated March
24, Siva wrote to the Cell that
he has received his phone back
to his complete satisfaction.
He thanked the Cell for its
support and guidance.
The Cell works from 5.30
p.m to 6.30 p.m from Monday
to Friday and gives free advice
on consumers’ problems. Its
phone numbers are 98843
55394 and 2622 0129.

Kothari Academy students receive certificates
By M. A. SADANAND
President Prathiba has scored over all her male
predecessors in Lutyan’s Palace as the most fiscally
draining tenant of free India to the tune of 205 crore
rupees in 12 jaunts abroad to see some people and perhaps
also to taste foreign food, only to conclude that there is
nothing half as good as the good old home food cooked by
her retinue of chefs!
Democracy is a many splendoured thing and, for its
demonstration to the wooly-witted outsiders to reckon
that the country that has almost the bottom line per
capita income of about 250 rupees a month for 98% of the
population, a small jaunt by an old lady in the nation’s
service cannot upset Pranab Mukherjee’s apple cart more
than Amma’s 10 lakh rupees per day loss caused by the
Koodankulam gangsters. One lives and, I hope, learns.
From the global wisdom, a part of which is not personally
taxed by the tax hounds, I only hope that she would have
returned with the firm resolve to exercise her constitutional
prerogative of granting life to those who have been readied
for the death-drop that is the continuing shame of free
India which continues to worship Macaulay, though his
own country has dumped the death sentence in
the stinking Thames river.
Keeping company with India’s philosophy of a ‘a life for
a life’ is the fabled land of U.S.A. whose president Truman,
during the Second World War, ended the picnic with a
grand show of 3,00,000 Japanese corpses by dropping just
two ‘Little Boys’ in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.
Pratibha, not willing to strike so horrendously, still
permits human sacrifices in the name of Law, when she
can Constitutionally say ‘NO”. She also permits USA to
import from Indian companies lethal poisons for executing
the U.S. prisoners sentenced to death!
I hope she has discovered the reason a human life is
worth at least 205 crore rupees that the poor worshipping
country has splurged on her. Before some busybody
prepares a grander tour before she retires soon, I hereby
propose myself as the next President of India and promise
not to spend a pie of the people’s money or draw a salary.
I will live on what N.H.B brings me and my wife’s pension.
I just want to take a Passport to visit Nairobi, where I was
born and see if I can meet friend Obama’s kith or kin.

ANNA NAGAR TIMES: Kilpauk - Purasai Edition
DOWN THE MEMORY LANE - 449
By RANDOR GUY
NANAVATI – AHUJA MURDER CASE - 4
During those decades, Blitz offered the readers a wide
variety of interesting features that contributed to its becoming
the top-selling magazine of India. There was coverage of
murder cases under the series title ‘In The Crimelight’,
written by R. P. Iyer, one of the top journalists of the period
and a brilliant person.
(In later years, Iyer published and edited the magazine
‘Cocktail which was obviously inspired by the famous Playboy
magazine of the United States. The magazine sadly folded up
after some time. In later years, another similar monthly
magazine named Debonair made its appearance in Bombay.
It was in this publication that this writer began making
experiments with his career as a writer and wrote a series
called The Ribald Classic which attracted much attention. It
was then he began to seriously think of turning into a fulltime writer! Well, that’s another story!)
There was another weekly box feature in this magazine
which also attracted much attention, and one wishes that
such a feature is written today by some responsible writer.
The box item titled SONS AND SONS-IN-LAW PRIVATE
UNLIMITED!’ mentioned the names of persons who were
appointed in high government and private jobs together with
the names of their VIP patrons who were responsible for the
appointments even though the appointees did not have the
required qualifications! Sounds familiar, does it, in today’s
India?
Russi Karanjia, the editor of Blitz, took up the cause of
Nanavati, his fellow Parsi, with crusading spirit and spared
no effort with funds coming from the rich Parsi community.
The wealthy Sindhi community rallied behind the murder
victim Prem Ahuja.
The leading top lawyer of Bombay, Ram Jethmalani, still
active and still in the news, was retained by Ahujas sister to
take care of the interests of her brother. It was believed that
Jethmalani received an astronomical fee for doing his work
in this case and the contribution came from the wealthy
Sindhi business community.
The Bombay police did not agree with Nanavatis version of
the facts and promptly charged him with murder. The trial
became a cause célèbre in India. The Parsi community to
which Nanavati belonged was outraged, organising rallies
and petitions in his favour. Newspapers gave saturation
coverage to the case and later the trial.
When Nanavati left the court room after testifying, he was
showered with hundred rupee notes smeared with lipstick.
Like many teen idols after him, he received marriage proposals
by the handful, as many concluded that he was too good for
his wife even as a penitent Sylvia, dressed in a white nylon
sari, testified in favour of her husband.
The prosecution s biggest talking point was that if Nanavati
had indeed struggled with Ahuja, Ahujas towel would have
come off instead of staying on. That was not all. The fact that
Nanavati had first dropped his family off at cinema before
signing out a revolver from his ship under false pretences
also seemed to indicate that he had been in control of his
emotions and that the heat of the moment justification was
not true.
None of this mattered to the jury which returned a Not
Guilty verdict. Considering the jury’s decision as perverse,
the trial court Judge referred the matter to the Bombay High
Court which ultimately found Nanavati guilty and sentenced
him to life imprisonment.
However the matter did not end there. Shortly thereafter,
the Indian Government abolished all jury trials in India on
the ground that jury verdicts were overly susceptible to
media pressures.
In Madras Presidency, with Madras city as its capital,
criminal cases generating within the city limits were tried at
the High Court Original Criminal Sessions Side presided
over by a High Court Judge and a jury of nine members. The
system was in force until the mid-1950s when it was abolished
mainly because of political considerations. Some of those
responsible for the abolition felt that the city was getting a
special treatment in such trials which it did not deserve!
Many High Court lawyers felt sorry over the abolition of
not only Criminal Sessions but also the Civil Original Side
jurisdiction of the High Court and they laid the blame
squarely on a Minister who was a lawyer from the districts.
No prizes for guessing his identity!
