Každé obsahuje 3 èasti - vizuálny podnet, tematický okruh a simuláciu/roleplay s uvedením
tituly vydavate¾stva Pearson Longman, konkrétne tituly New Opportunities a Success.
Tabu¾kové preh¾ady a tému „Slovensko - vlas moja“ spracovali reprezentantky
vydavate¾stva Pearson Longman a spoloènosti Slovak Ventures, s.r.o.

Slovakia
(long form: Slovak Republic)
is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a population of over five million and an area of about 49,000 square
kilometres (almost 19,000 square miles).
The Slovak Republic borders the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east
and Hungary to the south.
The largest city is its capital, Bratislava.
Slovakia is a member state of the European Union, NATO, OECD, WTO, and other international organizations.
The Slavic people arrived in the territory of present day Slovakia between the 5th and 6th century AD during
the Migration Period (Migration of Nations).
Various parts of Slovakia belonged to Samo's Empire, the first known political unit of Slavs, Great Moravia, the Kingdom of Hungary, Habsburg (Austrian) monarchy, Austria-Hungary and Czechoslovakia throughout history.
Slovakia became independent on January 1, 1993 with the peaceful division of Czechoslovakia in the Velvet
Divorce; it was the last European country to become independent in the 20th century.
Slovakia is a high-income economy with one of the fastest rates of growth in the EU and OECD. It joined the European Union in 2004 and will join the Eurozone on 1 January 2009.
Flag:
Coat of Arms:
Motto: "Afferant Montes Pacem Populo"
Anthem:
"May mountains bring people peace"
Nad Tatrou sa blýska
"Lightning over the Tatras"
Geography
The Slovak landscape is noted primarily for its mountainous nature, with the Carpathian Mountains extending
across most of the northern half of the country. Amongst these mountain ranges are the high peaks of the Tatra
mountains. To the north, close to the Polish border, are the High Tatras which are a popular skiing destination
and home to many scenic lakes and valleys as well as the highest point in Slovakia, the Gerlachovský štít at
2,655 metres (8,711 ft), and the country's highly symbolic mountain Kriváò.
Major Slovak rivers are the Danube, the Váh and the Hron.
The Slovak climate lies between the temperate and continental climate zones with relatively warm summers and
cold, cloudy and humid winters. The area of Slovakia can be divided into three kinds of climatic zones and the first
zone can be divided into two sub-zones.
Demographics
The majority of the inhabitants of Slovakia are ethnically Slovak (85.8%). Hungarians are the largest ethnic minority
(9.7%). Other ethnic groups, as of the 2001 census, include Roma with 1.7%, Ruthenians or Ukrainians with
1%, and other or unspecified, 1.8%.
The official state language is Slovak, a member of the Slavic Language Family, but Hungarian is also widely
spoken in the south of the country and enjoys a co-official status in some municipalities, and many people also
speak Czech.

Politics
Slovakia is a parliamentary democratic republic with a multi-party system.
The Slovak head of state is the President (Ivan Gašparoviè, 2004 - 2009), elected by direct popular vote for a five-year
term. Most executive power lies with the head of government, the Prime Minister (Robert Fico, 2006 - 2010), who is
usually the leader of the winning party, but he/she needs to form a majority coalition in the parliament. The Prime Minister
is appointed by the President. The remainder of the cabinet is appointed by the president on the recommendation of the
Prime Minister.
Slovakia's highest legislative body is the 150-seat unicameral National Council of the Slovak Republic (Národná rada
Slovenskej republiky). Delegates are elected for a four-year term on the basis of proportional representation. Slovakia's
highest judicial body is the Constitutional Court of Slovakia (Ústavný súd), which rules on constitutional issues.
The 13 members of this court are appointed by the president from a slate of candidates nominated by parliament.

Traditions, Conventions and Holidays
in Slovakia
The majority of religious people are Roman Catholics (60%). The others are Evangelist, Greek Catholics,
Calvinist, Russian Orthodox and Jewish. Slovakia is a country with a long Christian tradition. No wonder,
that the two most important holidays are Christmas and Easter.
Christmas
Among children Christmas is the most exciting and fascinating time.
Preparations for this holiday start many weeks before. Some people have been shopping for Christmas presents
since October. Christmas decorations, colourful Christmas lights, and Christmas trees can be seen in the
streets and shops two months in advance. Christmas carols are sung everywhere, people buy presents and
send postcards to their relatives and friends.
On Christmas Eve (24.12.) homes are already decorated with a Christmas tree - the most important decoration.
Mothers prepare the traditional Christmas dinner: Sauerkraut or Lentil soup for the first course and fish (carp)
and potato salad for the second course. Tables are decorated with candles and wreaths and there are a lot of
cakes and pastries as well as fruit. Fathers say toasts and the Host is eaten with honey. In most families an
apple is cut to see what the next year will be like. If the core inside is nice, the upcoming year should be
successful and happy. After the dinner the Christmas presents are exchanged, which is then followed by
visiting our nearest and dearest family members and friends. The last tradition of the evening is going to
church for the Midnight Mass.
The word Christmas comes from "Christ's Mass - the special church service which celebrates the birth of Jesus
Christ. This is the root of the festival of Christmas. The next two days are spent by visiting relatives, eating
traditional foods, drinking, watching TV or taking leisurely walks.

Traditions, Conventions and Holidays
in Slovakia
Easter
Another important religious holiday is Easter. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter. It is the anniversary of Christ's
crucifixion. Easter Sunday is the day of resurrection and Easter Monday is the day of assention.
Our traditions are completely different from other countries. Boys and men go to every house where there are girls
and women. They have whips and buckets of water and they whip and douse the girls and women with water. While
the girls give them decorated eggs, offer drinks and give the males a ribbon on the whip. Somebody says that this
tradition is based on whipping Jesus; the others say it is connected to hardening and well-being.
The great variety of nations, ethnic groups and religions contributes much to the richness of a country's culture. Within
the country the people migrate from villages and mountainous parts to bigger towns or cities. There is still a tendency
for Slovaks to leave their country and stay or live abroad. That is why the population density varies a great deal in
Slovakia.
The Slovaks are said to be friendly, open, but not very pushy and assertive. We admire everything abroad and very
often don't know what they have at home. We are really hardworking and that is why we are so successful abroad.
These features/characteristics are pointed to be typical, but it does not necessarily mean that all the Slovaks are what
they are said to be. There are big differences between individuals as well as between customs and habits. Many
traditional Slovak customs and habits have changed as the way of life has changed especially in bigger cities. For
example nowadays, Easter is more about visiting family or skiing than whipping and splashing water.
A typical Slovak family lives in a flat (a house if it is a village), has about 2 children, a car and a pet. When a young
couple decides to get married, they usually live for the next 3-4 years with one of their parents, because flats and
houses are extremely expensive or they rent a flat. Anyway, to get a steady dwelling means to take a mortgage and
saving for many years or decades to come.
The most popular sports are hockey and football. Typical hobbies are gardening, watching TV, and meeting friends.
Among teenagers, discos, going to pubs and cinema are popular pastimes.
The Slovak Republic is a country with a beautiful countryside and a rich history. Visitors like coming back and we
should be proud and be aware of our treasure - our country.
