aša najbolja reprezentacija otvara novu stranicu - prvi
put u istoriji igramo u Jagodini.
preko sportskih kriterijuma i ostalom, uradili poslednjih
U tom smeru, posebnu zahvalnost i čestitke
naredna dva velika takmičenja i uveren sam da ka tome
težimo.
Selektor Siniša Mihajlović formirao je novu
selekciju igrača i konstituisao nova pravila. Dres Srbije
pobedu.
Srbija ide dalje! Uskoro nas očekuje početak
novog kvalifikacionog susreta, a verujem da ćemo zajedno
imati prilike za nove radosti.
I
t is my pleasure to greet and welcome all to the final match
in Group A in the qualifying round for 2014 World Cup
in Brazil between the senior national teams of Serbia and
Macedonia.
Our senior national team is turning a new page
– for the first time, our team will play in Jagodina. With this
decision we wanted to congratulate the people from the local
Super League club for all their efforts in various areas, from
infrastructure to sports and other achievements, which have
already been crowned with their winning of the first Serbian Cup title. For this reason, I especially wish to thank and
congratulate the mayor of Jagodina, Mr. Dragan Markovic,
and his associates, for everything they have done with their
investments in FC Jagodina and, thereby, in Serbian football
itself.
With this match, we are completing a cycle. If we
are to judge only by the results achieved, we will not remember it fondly. However, even before this cycle started, we had
clearly pointed out the main goal of qualifying for either of
the two large tournaments and I am certain that we are moving in that direction.
Head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic formed an entirely
new team of players and imposed new rules. Since last year,
a place in the Serbian national team was given to some new
young players, who have, in the meantime, significantly
grown and become more mature, convincing us with their
qualities and conduct that in the future they intend to demonstrate great performances, victories, success...
This is the reason why this match against Macedonia is very important to us. It will not make us one of the
contestants at the forthcoming World Cup, but I believe that,
once more, it will convince us that the road we have taken is
the right one in every respect and provide an opportunity for
us to further strengthen our determination.
It is also my great pleasure to greet our dear
guests from Macedonia. Our qualifying group has included
Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia, and I believe that we have
all used these football matches to establish new, friendly relations between our nations and countries, which in itself
would be one great victory.
Serbia is moving on! We are about to enter a new
qualifying cycle, and I am sure that we will all have a chance
to celebrate new achievements.

U
Reprezentacija naše zemlje prvi put u istoriji
igra u Jagodini. Radujem se zbog te činjenice i verujem
da će navijači napuniti tribine stadiona, podržati igrače i
još jednom svetu poslati sliku jake i dobre Srbije, zemlje
Naš dolazak u Jagodinu nije slučajan, time smo pokazali
Neka navijači budu naš 12. igrač i
pozivam sve da pobedom završimo ovaj kvalifikacioni
ciklus. Dobar kraj kao najava još boljeg početka novog
takmičenja...
W
ith the match against Macedonia we are completing
the qualifying cycle for 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Regardless of the fact that this match may not bring much
in terms of competition, I will demand from my players to
keep our very positive trend throughout preparations for
this match, as well as on the pitch.
The approach that I will insist on is that this is
an important match for us. If we agree that we have started
moving in the right direction, then we must prove it and
grow as a team match after match, demonstrating that we
are a serious team that deserves respect.
I want our national team to gain and fully accept the winning mentality. This is a lasting process that one
needs to work on whenever possible. I believe in these boys;
I have pointed out their qualities from the very beginning
and now I want them to show these qualities in action to
everyone.
Our country’s national team is playing in Jagodina for the first time in its history. That makes me very happy
and I am certain that the supporters will fill the stadium,
support the players and, once more, show the world an image of strong and superior Serbia, a country where fair play
applies both on and off the pitch. Our coming to Jagodina is
not an accident. It serves as a way of showing respect for everything that has been achieved there, mostly in infrastructure, and I am glad that fans across Serbia are able to watch
the national team’s performances in person.
For the match itself, I want serious approach and
– a victory. Do not forget that that the Macedonians have
defeated us in Skopje. As we are athletes, the desire for triumph and a rematch is our obligation and I believe we will
be able to achieve it. Let the supporters be our 12th player,
and so I call on to everyone to end this qualifying cycle with
a win. That would be a good ending that would serve as an
announcement of an even better beginning of the new competition cycle...

u Brazilu 2014. Aleksandar Kolarov je dostigao punu
N
A
On će, međutim, biti uzdanica našeg državnog
tima i u sledećim kvalifikacijama za evropsko prvenstvo. To
fudbalera u srednjoj generaciji reprezentativaca.
Zajedno sa svojim bivšim klupskim drugom iz
OFK Beograda, Branislavom Ivanovićem, Kolarov danas
predstavlja okosnicu državnog tima Srbije. Srčan, disciplinovan i snažan, iako deluje sa pozicije levog beka, predstavlja
veliku opasnost za sve protivničke odbrane.
Po šuterskim sposobnostima, važi za najboljeg
izvođača slobodnih udaraca. Jugoslovenski i srpski fudbal
Ružićem, prvim srpskim i jugoslovenskim „bombarderom“,
Hošić, Trifke Mihajlović, Petar Nikezić, sve do aktuelnog
jače i preciznije nego svi drugi. Od tada, pa preko Čukaričkog,
OFK Beograd, Lacija, do Mančester sitija i reprezentacije, krasi ga neverovatna ubojitost.
Zahvaljujući takvoj sposobnosti, on očarava englesku publiku, a nemerljivu važnost ima
i u državnom timu Srbije.
Ivanović i Kolarov. Drugovi iz OFK Beograda su stub odbrane
i začetnici svih akcija državnog tima Srbije.
prvenstvo budu predvodnici mladog reeprezentativnog talasa.
12
t the end of the current qualifying cycle for 2014 World Cup
in Brazil, Aleksandar Kolarov has reached full maturity as a
player. His physical, mental and tactical abilities have reached the
highest level so far in his football career. It is a real shame that,
despite such level of preparedness, Kolarov has to miss playing at
the World Cup.
However, our national team will be able to rely on him
in the next qualifying round for the European Championship. The
practice gained through matches played for Italian and English
clubs makes this young Syrmian boy one of the best and most experienced football players among the middle generation of national
team players.
Together with his team mate from OFK Beograd, Branislav Ivanovic, Kolarov is today one of the pillars of the Serbian
national team. Enthusiastic, disciplined and strong, even from a
position of left-back, he poses a threat to the defence of every opposing team.
For his shooting abilities, he is considered one of the
best at free-kicks. Yugoslav and Serbian football has always boasted
talented shooters who were loved by the supporters. This is the case
with Kolarov too. He stands shoulder to shoulder with Jovan Ruzic,
the first Yugoslav and Serbian “bomber” after World War I who was
nicknamed “Cannonball” for his devastating shot.
Later, he was followed by other players with extremely
strong shot: Bora Kostic, Dusan Maravic, Josip Bukal, Ismet Hosic,
Trifke Mihajlovic, Petar Nikezic, all the way to the current head
coach Sinisa Mihajlovic. All of them, as the spectators used to say
– “punctured their opponents’ nets”. Similarly, Kolarov too has a
strong and precise shot. Goal’s distance is of no importance to him.
He has proved that many times over throughout his career.
A strong and precise shot with a left foot was a serious
indicator for his first football coach in his native place of Vojka.
When he was a boy, as soon as he entered the pitch of the country
football club, he would “smack” the ball harder and more precise
that anyone else. From those days, through his performances in
Cukaricki, OFK Beograd, Lazio, to Manchester City and the national team, his shot has been unbelievably powerful.
Still, these are not the only qualities that Aleksandar
Kolarov possesses. Today he is a well–rounded player – in terms
of tactics, technique and physical fitness. He can easily and skilfully move up the flank, from where he supplies crosses that seem
to have “eyes of their own”. With this ability he is able to mesmerize
the English fans, but he is extremely important to Serbia’s national
team as well.
There are not many national teams in Europe that
can boast such a pair of defenders that Serbia has in Ivanovic and
Kolarov. Team mates from OFK Beograd serve as the backbone of
defence and initiators of all plays in the national team. The two
of them are expected to continue leading the new wave of young
national team players through the next qualifying round for the
European Championship.

veka. Prvi meč makedonski fudbaleri odigrali su 20.
aprila 1919. godine u Skoplju. Selekcija engleske armije,
Posle završetka Drugog svetskog rata, u okviru
Saveza sportova Skoplja, formirana je fudbalska sekcija.
U toj organizaciji fudbal se zadržao do polovine 1948. godine. Konačno, Fudbalski savez Makedonije formiran je
14. avgusta 1949. godine u Skoplju, u okviru Fudbalskog
saveza Jugoslavije.
Kada je 1991. godine proglašena nezavisna
Makedonija, formiran je Fudbalski savez Makedonije. Za
predsednik je izabran Ljubisav Ivanov. On je bio veliko
sportsko ime i u okviru bivše Jugoslavije.
- 1990. i 1991, Makedonija nije imala ni jednu nacionalnu
selekciju.
Godine 1994. Makedonija je postala član FIFA i
UEFA.

T
he beginnings of football in Macedonia date back to the
early 20th century. The first match of the Macedonian
players was played in Skopje on April 20, 1919. It was the
English army team composed of the best players among the
recruits, against Napredok of Skopje. Napredok won the
match (2:0).
This is the date that, after the dissolution of former Yugoslavia, Macedonia considers as the official date
when the football history started in the country.
The match against the “English army” team is
officially the first football match played on the territory of
today’s Macedonia. In the honour of that first match, at the
place where it was played, a monument was erected in the
form of a football weighing 250 kilograms. The monument
was erected in 1979 to mark the anniversary of this event.
In the period from 1919 and 2002, a number of football
clubs were formed in Macedonia. The first club was Vardar,
which was later to become the most famous Macedonian
football club.
During the World War II, Macedonian clubs
played against a number of teams consisting of German
soldiers, as well as against Bulgarian teams. Interestingly,
during this period, many Macedonian players played for
the Bulgarian national team.
After the World War II ended, a football section was established within the Skopje Sports Association.
Football remained within this organization until the second half of 1948. Finally, Macedonian Football Association
was established on 14 August 1949 in Skopje, as part of the
Football Association of Yugoslavia.
When Macedonia declared independence in
1991, the Football Association of Macedonia was organized. Its first elected president was Ljubisav Ivanov. He
had already been a renowned athlete within former Yugoslavia.
After a long period of football development
within Yugoslavia, following the dissolution of the socialist country, for two years – 1990 and 1991, Macedonia did
not have any national teams. During 1991, youth national
teams of all former Yugoslav republics contested the youth
tournaments, trying to make up for the lack of official competitions.
In 1994, Macedonia joined FIFA and UEFA.

Strugi, u Makedoniji, avgusta 1935. godine,
odigrana je prva međunarodna fudbalska utakmica. U tom gradu gostovao je albanski SK Dragoj
iz Podgradca. Susret sa domaćom SK Jugoslavijom
završen je bez pobednika - 2:2.
Reprezentacije je između dva svetska rata
odigrala ukupno 109 utakmica.
fudbalere protiv nekog stranog protivnika.
Prvi put u novembru
jugoslovenskog kluba.
To su bili: Kiril Simonovski (1946-1949,
Partizan), Sokrat Mojsov (1964-66, Vardar), Metodije Spasovski (1968-1969, Vardar), Kiril Dojčinovski
(1968-1970, C. zvezda), Dragan Mutibarić (19691970, Vardar), Dragan Simeunović (1980, Vardar),
Petar Georgijevski (1984, Vardar), Čedomir Janevski
(1987, Vardar), Darko Pančev (1984-1990, Vardar, C.

Vujadin Stanojković (1988-1990, Vardar, Partizan),
Dragan Kanatlarovski (1990, C. zvezda) i Boban Babunski (1991, Vardar).
T
he first international football match was played
in August 1935, in Struga, Macedonia. The
city hosted the Albanian team of SK Dragoj from
Podgradec. The match against the home team of SK
Jugoslavija ended in a draw - 2:2.
In the period between the two World Wars,
Yugoslav national team played a total of 109 matches.
During this period, Skopje never had the chance to
host a match between the Yugoslav national team
and a foreign one. Later, the Macedonian capital was
the home city of the former Yugoslavia’s national
team only on three matches. First time, it was in November 1953 when Yugoslavia defeated Israel in the
qualifying round for 1954 World Cup, with a goal by
the legendary Milos Milutinovic.
Second time, also in the qualifying round
for World Cup, Skopje was the host to the Belgian
national team. At this match, Yugoslavia was even
better, winning by 4:0. The scorers were: Metodije
Spasovski 2, Rudolf Belin and Dragan Dzajic.
And finally, in the Balkan Cup, in 1978,
Skopje hosted the match against Greece. Yugoslav
national team won by 4:1. Vahid Halilhodzic scored
three goals and Dusan Savic scored one.
Within the period from 1920 to 1991, the
national team of former Yugoslavia had 13 players
coming from Macedonia, most them being members
of Vardar or some other Yugoslav club.
These were the following players: Kiril
Simonovski (1946-1949, Partizan), Sokrat Mojsov
(1964-66, Vardar), Metodije Spasovski (1968-1969,

JAGODINA ZA PONOS SRBIJE / JAGODINA AS PRIDE OF SERBIA
J
prvi pisani podatak o postojanju Jagodine u 14. veku.
i sadašnje ime. Na početku Prvog srpskog ustanka, dve
najvažnije bitke odigrale su se u Jagodini. U prvoj bici,
i oslobodio Jagodinu.
Vlada
umereno kontinentalna klima sa hladnim zimama i toplim
letima.
Lokalna samouprava se trudi da podjednako
razvija sve društvene delatnosti, posebno IT tehnologiju,
nauku, kulturu i sport. Iz budžeta opštine se finansira 30
različitih sportova: 110 gradskih i seoskih sportskih organizacija. U opštini ima oko 6.000 registrovanih sportista
svih uzrasta.
Nekadašnje Svetozarevo je u bivšoj Jugoslaviji
bilo centar boksa.
nisu izostali. FK Jagodina je prošle godine svom gradu podarila pehar Kupa Srbije. Jagodinski kik-bokseri osvajali
su mnoge nacionalne, evropske i svetske titule.
Za fudbalerima i kik-bokserima mnogo ne
zaostaju ni rukometaši i košarkaši. Mnogo se ulaže u
školski i amaterski sport. Njihov dom je Hala sportova sa
2.600 mesta. Kompleks Gradskog stadiona, sa natkrivenim
tribinama, pruža idealne uslove za rad. Na tribinama ima
14.000 mesta. Postoji i atletska staza, koja omogućava razvoj bazičnog sporta.
J
agodina is a city that is taking big steps in the advancement of all of its social and economic areas. Once a small
Serbian provincial town, Jagodina has developed into a
modern settlement with a population of over 35,000. As
the administrative centre of Pomoravlje District, its administrative area, which includes the surrounding villages, has a population of 70,000.
The oldest traces of civilization at the location
of today’s Jagodina date back to Neolithic Period – around
5,500 years B.C. Later, the first century saw the development of Roman settlement beneath Djurdjevo brdo hill,
which serves as the city’s landmark.
The medieval village of Jagodina was mentioned for the first time in 1399, in a letter from Princess
Milica and her sons Stefan and Vukan to the Municipality
of Dubrovnik. This document is the first written information on existence of Jagodina in the 14th century.
In 1411, Despot Stefan Lazarevic, in the thencalled Jagodnja, convened the Parliament where it issued a
decree with a golden seal, known as “chrysobull”, by which
it awarded new privileges to Hilandar Monastery.
During the Ottoman period, a settlement
formed at the location of today’s Jagodina which the Turks
called “Jagodina palanka”, which led to today’s name of the
city. At the start of the First Serbian Uprising, two most
significant battles took place in Jagodina. In the first one,
Karadjordje suffered a defeat, but in the second one he defeated the Turks and freed Jagodina. After the Second Serbian Uprising, Jagodina’s economy grew stronger, and it
developed into a border town of Serbia under Prince Milos
Obrenovic.
Modern Jagodina has a good geographic location. It is located 136 km south of Belgrade, extending
over 470 square kilometres. It is situated at the bottom of
Djurdjevo Brdo hill, at an elevation of 116 metres. It has
a continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers.
Local government makes an effort to equally
develop all areas, especially IT, science, arts and culture
and sports. The municipal budget provides funding for 30
different sports: in 110 city and village sports organizations. There are over 6,000 registered athletes of all ages.
Known at the time under the name of Svetozarevo, Jagodina was a boxing centre in former Yugoslavia.
The boxing matches at the time used to attract as much
as 20,000 people. Today, Jagodina’s most popular sports
include football and kickboxing. Large investments have
been made in the two which, in turn, enabled achievement
of good results: FC Jagodina won the Serbian Cup title last
year, while many of Jagodina’s kickboxers won a number of
national, European and world titles.

ZA PONOS I POBEDU
PRIDE AND VICTORY
P
red nama je još jedna važna utakmica. Nažalost, ponovo ćemo igrati bez prisustva publike. Za nas je svaki
meč odlučujući. Zato smatram da bi navijači mnogo značili
mojim momcima.
plasman. Irci, ipak, mogu da pomrse račune svim ekipama
i budu značajan nivelator konačnog plasmana u grupi. Ta
Irske.
W
e are about to play another important match. Unfortunately, we will play without supporters once more.
For us, every match is crucial, which is why I feel that the
presence of fans would mean a lot to my guys.
It is important to us that the national U-21 team
will include players who have also earned their place in the
senior national team. However, we have an agreement with
head coach Sinisa Mihajlovic that, if there are no problems
with other members of the senior national team, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Filip Djuricic, Lazar Markovic and Mateja
Nastasic would join us in October and November when
we are to play against Italy and Belgium. It is needless to
say how much their presence would mean for us against
Northern Ireland, but it would mean even more against
Belgium and Italy.
Northern Ireland is not seen as a team that is
likely to reach top places. However, the Irish can spoil
plans for all other teams and may significantly affect the
final standings within the group. Their national team has
proved its abilities in a match against the Group’s leading
team - Belgium, after losing narrowly to it. Judging by what
the Irish have demonstrated against Belgium, the result of
the match could have easily gone the other way.
The Irish, as it is generally known, belong to the
British school of football. They encourage jumping and
pose a great threat at restarts. They are very disciplined
and organized and, naturally, traditionally vigorous. These
are the main qualities of Northern Ireland’s style of play.
And this is exactly the reason why we must not underestimate them. But, if we play the way we usually do, anything
but victory would be a real surprise. We have to demonstrate the greatest caution and seriousness, because that is
the only way we will be able to reach our goal and triumph
in the end.
As our group is very hard, we must not rest
for a moment. Nevertheless, this generation, as much as
the previous ones, is known for its seriousness and hard
work. That gives us reasons to anticipate the match against
Northern Ireland, as well as the one against Belgium and
Italy, with optimism.

PROMISING SCORER OF THE NATIONAL U-21 TEAM
Aleksandar Mitrović
ČUDO OD DETETA
WONDERBOY
N
fudbalu ikada jedan fudbaler istovremeno
igrao za tri selekcije. Taj podvig napravio je mladi
osamnaestogodišnjak Aleksandar Mitrović. U kratkom vremenskom razdoblju, osvojio je titulu omladinskog prvaka Evrope, debitovao u „A“ selekciji
Srbije i bio nezamenljivi član Mlade reprezentacije.
Pre toga, Mitrović je napravio još jedan
sportski podvig - debitovao je za A selekciju, a dan
kasnije je igrao važnu kvalifikacionu utakmicu Omladinske reprezentacije Srbije. Taj podatak dovoljno
govori koliko je ovom tinejdžeru stalo do fudbala,
reprezentacije i koliko želi da napareduje u sportu.
Belgijski Anderleht je to rano prepoznao
i brzo ga privukao u svoju sredinu, ostavivši našim
traženo mesto u svim ligama i najboljim klubovima.
fudbalera.
Doskorašnji napadač Partizana je veoma
rano dostigao tehničko-taktičku i fizičku zrelost.
Aleksandar
to radi spontano i bez straha - bez obzira da li igra u
klupskom ili reprezentativnom dresu.

T
hroughout its history, Serbian and Yugoslav
football has never seen a player who is a member of three national teams. This was achieved by the
young eighteen-year old Aleksandar Mitrovic. In a
short period of time, he won the European Under-19
Football Championship title, made his debut for the
senior national team and proved to be an irreplaceable member of the national U-21 team.
Before that, Mitrovic had achieved another
sporting feat – he made a debut for the senior national team, only to play an important qualifying match
with the Serbian national U-19 team a day later. This
is enough to see how much this teenager cares about
football and the national team, and how much he
wants to improve.
The Belgian club of Anderlecht recognized
this quality early on and quickly included him in
its team, leaving our supporters to regret not seeing
more of him at the local stadiums.
Mitrovic plays at the position which is
the most sought-after one in Europe. Position of a
centre forward is in very high demand in all football leagues and the best of clubs. Mitrovic fills this
position in the best possible way, even though his age
makes him a youth category player.
The boy who was until recently the member of Partizan has reached maturity in terms of
tactical abilities, technique and physical fitness very
early. He already makes a difference as a member of
a team. Mitrovic is a modern player, with excellent
movement across the field, who knows how to keep
the ball and is good with both his feet and poses a
constant threat “in the air”. There are not many players in Europe today who want and know how to take
the responsibility at such an early age. Aleksandar
does it spontaneously and without fear – regardless
of whether he is playing for a club or a national team.

K
nogom udari drugog. Novo pravilo usvojeno je godinu dana kasnije, dakle, 1891.
Jednako važno, a mora se reći i jednako sporno pravilo
u savremenom fudbalu jeste ofsajd. I to pravilo je poteklo sa tla
Severne Irske.
fudbala u celom svetu iako nikada nije igrala značajnu ulogu u
međunarodnoj konkurenciji. Kada je novembra 1880. godine, u
„Kvins hotelu“ u Belfastu, formirana Irska fudbalska asocijacija
kasniji period. Tom istorijskom sastanku, pored sazivača predstavnika kluba Klaftonvila, prisustvovali su još Avoneil, Distillery,
Knock, Oldpark, Moyola Park i Limavady.
Makaleri, prvi sekretar novog saveza, otkrio tu igru u Edinburgu,
T
he inaugural meeting of the Irish football association was
held at the proposal of Cliftonville club – the oldest in Ireland. There, an institution gathering clubs from Belfast and the
surrounding areas was established for the purpose of adopting
unifying constitution and setting the rules along the lines of those
adopted by their Scottish counterparts seven year earlier.
Major Spencer Chichester was elected the first president of the Irish Football Association. He made a plan for the
organization of the Irish Cup, where on 9 April 1881 the team of
Moyola Park defeated Cliftonville by 1:0 and won the title.
The international matches were the next challenge for
the new national association. It did not start well for the Irish, as
they lost to England, at a match in Bloomfield in 1882, by an astonishing 13:0.
World football has an Irishman from the North to
thank for the introduction of one of the most important rules in
modern football, the one regarding the penalty kick. It was William McCrum, goalkeeper of Armagh club Milford, who in 1890
demanded from IFA to propose to International Football Association Board to introduce a penalty kick, to be taken 11 metres from
the goal. The proposal was initially rejected because it was believed
that it was virtually impossible for a football player to foul another
on purpose. The new rule was adopted a year later, in 1891.
An equally important and, one must say, equally disputed law in modern football is the offside rule. This law too came
from Northern Ireland. It was proposed in 1920 by Billy McCracken, an international star at the time, who saw a deficiency in the
laws of the game. This law is today’s corner stone of the approach
of many coaches.
In this way, Northern Ireland has made an immense
contribution to the development of football across the world, even
though it has never had a significant role at international competitions. When the Irish Football Association (IFA) was founded
in 1880, in “Queens Hotel” in Belfast, as the fourth oldest in the
world, no one could even imagine that only after a decade and a
half the Irish would influence the game of football through innovation and leave a mark to last throughout its later development.
This historic gathering, apart from the Cliftonville club which organized it, was also attended by Avoneil, Distillery, Knock, Oldpark, Moyola Park and Limavady.
Initially, football came to Ireland around 1875, when
the Scottish clubs Queens Park and The Caledonians staged an exhibition at the Ulster Cricket Ground (Ulster is another name for
Northern Ireland) in Ballynafeigh. Before that, the first secretary
of the new association, John M. McAlery had discovered the game
in Edinburgh where he had been on honeymoon.
Irish Football Association (IFA) made its greatest
achievements off the pitch. As member of International Football
Association Board, a body of FIFA, which determines the Laws of
the Game, IFA has equal rights as other British football associations and has always had a leading role in introducing, changing
or adopting new Laws of the Game.
Until the partition of Ireland in 1921, IFA governed
football on the entire Irish island. After the decision of the clubs
from Dublin, Republic of Ireland formed its own football association, the Football Association of Ireland, or FAI.

SRBIJA – ZEMLJA SPORTA
S
i organizatori mnogih međunarodnih sportskih priredbi.
Zahvaljujući univerzalnim i ogromnim potencijalima, u
kulture, politike i drugih oblasti života...
odbojkaše (1975), Svetsko prvenstvo u vaterpolu i plivanju
(1973), Svetsko prvenstvo u kajaku i kanuu (1971, 1975,
1978, 1982, 1987), Prvenstvo Evrope u fudbalu (1976),
prvenstva Evrope u košarci (2005), vaterpolu (2006), boksu
(1978), stonom tenisu, kao i nadmetanja u mnogim drugim
ekipnim i pojedinačnim sportovima. Iskusni i sposobni
Zimske Olimpijske igre u Sarajevu (1984), Univerzijada u
Hrvatskoj (1987)...
sekretara svetske kanu i kajakaške federacije (ICF) i njen
i značajna imena stručnjaka i sportista. Među njima su se
isticali košarkaški trenerski velikani: Aleksandar Nikolić,
Ranko Žeravica, Dušan Ivković, Željko Obradović, vaterpolo stručnjak Vlaho Orlić, rvačka legenda LjubomirGedža Ivanović, fudbalski trener Bora Milutinović i mnogi
drugi...
Mnogo srpskih sportista proneli su slavu Jugoslavije i Srbije širom sveta: atletičari Ivan Gubijan, Franjo
Mihalić, košarkaši Radivoje Korać, Dragan Kićanović,
Vlade Divac, Dejan Bodiroga, rukometaši Veselin
Vujović, Dragan Škrbić, braća Peruničić, fudbaleri Dragoslav Šekularac, Milutin Šoškić, Dragan Džajić, Piksi
Stojković, vaterpolisti Zoran Janković, Mirko Sandić,
Igor Milanović, Aleksandar Šapić, Vanja Udovičić, Filip
Filipović, odbojkaši braća Vladimir i Nikola Grbić, Ivan
Miljkovic, olimpijski pobednici strelci Jasna Šekarić, Aleksandra Ivošev, Goran i Ivana Maksimović, Milica Mandić
iz tekvondoa...
Srbija i Beograd su svetu podarili i mnoge
naučnike, književnike i umetnike.
zatim violinista Stefan Milenković i pijanistkinje, sestre
Lidija i Sanja Bizjak. Slikari Paja Jovanović, Uroš Predić i
nauke: Nikola Tesla, Milutin Milanković, Mihajlo Pupin
i Mileva Marić - zanavek su zadužili čovečanstvo svojim
dalekosežnim naučnim dostignućima.
SERBIA – LAND OF SPORTS
S
erbia has always been known as land of sports; football, without a doubt, being by far the most popular of
sports. Serbs are also known and respected as great hosts
and organizers of various international sporting events.
Such universal and large potentials helped produce a number of competent and experienced people in Serbia who,
as good hosts, organized many competitions, while at
the same time adhering to highest global standards. Traditional Serbian hospitality and openness has been used
in organization of significant sporting events. Serbia has
often been the host not only to athletes, but also to many
world renowned scientists, artists, politicians and others
professionals...
One of the first significant events organized by
Serbia, which would really pave the way for the arrival of
foreign athletes, was the 1961 European Basketball Championship. After basketball, competitions in other sports
followed – European Athletic Championship (1962), World
Women’s Handball Championship (1973), Men’s European
Volleyball Championship (1975), World Aquatics Championships (1973), Canoe Sprint World Championships (1971,
1975, 1978, 1982, 1987), European Football Championship (1976), European Basketball Championship (2005),
European Water Polo Championship (2006), World Amateur Boxing Championship (1978), European Table Tennis Championship, as well as competitions in many other
team and individual sports. Experienced and competent
professionals from Serbia were also among the main organizers of large events held across former Yugoslavia: World
Basketball Championship held in Ljubljana (1970), Winter
Olympic Games in Sarajevo (1984), Universiade in Croatia
(1987)...
Such potential and experience brought forth
many individuals which were later to become important
figures in international sporting associations. Borislav
Stankovic had been FIBA’s a general secretary for almost
three decades, Mihajlo Andrejevic was vice president of
FIFA, Milan Ercegan had been the leading figure in world
wrestling for many years (FILA), while Caslav Veljic had
held the position of general secretary of the International
Canoe Federation (ICF) and had been its lifetime honorary member for decades. Today, Aleksandar Boricic is the
vice president of the International Volleyball Federation
(FIVB).
Serbia has also given to the world many famous and significant experts and athletes. Most prominent among them are: great basketball coaches Aleksandar
Nikolic, Ranko Zeravica, Dusan Ivkovic, Zeljko Obradovic,
water polo expert Vlaho Orlic, wrestling legend LjubomirGedza Ivanovic, football coach Bora Milutinovic and many
others.
A number of Serbian athletes have made Yugoslavia and
Serbia famous across the world: athletics competitors Ivan
Gubijan and Franjo Mihalic, basketball players Radivoje
Korac, Dragan Kicanovic, Vlade Divac and Dejan Bodiroga, handball players Veselin Vujovic, Dragan Skrbic and
Perunicic brothers, football players Dragoslav Sekularac,
Milutin Soskic, Dragan Dzajic and Piksi Stojkovic, water
polo players Zoran Jankovic, Mirko Sandic, Igor Milanovic, Aleksandar Sapic, Vanja Udovicic and Filip Filipovic, volleyball players brothers Vladimir and Nikola Grbic
and Ivan Miljkovic, Olympic medallists in shooting Jasna
Sekaric, Aleksandra Ivosev, Goran and Ivana Maksimovic,
Olympic taekwondo medallist Milica Mandic...
Serbia and Belgrade also gave to the world
numerous scientists, writers and artists. Writer Ivo Andric won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1961 (for the
novel “Bridge on the Drina”), while great success was also
achieved by writer Milos Crnjanski, violinist Stefan Milenkovic and pianists, sisters Lidija and Sanja Bizjak. Painters
such as Paja Jovanovic, Uros Predic and Vlada Velickovic
are renowned across the globe, as well as the famous director Emir Kusturica...
Serbs are especially proud of their great scientists: Nikola Tesla, Milutin Milankovic, Mihajlo Pupin and
Mileva Maric – to whom mankind will be indebted forever
for their highly influential scientific achievements.
