Just how localised should we strive to be? What strategies can be employed to overcome the entrenched power of big business, big banks, and big government? How can people be motivated to embrace hands-on efforts at resistance and renewal? This workshop will examine the personal, social, ecological, and economic benefits of shifting direction away from the globalising economic path pushed by big business and government, towards more diverse, localised, and ecological economies rooted to place. We will be looking at the need for both policy level changes, as well community-based, grassroots initiatives. Our approach will be very broad and holistic, and will consider a range of issues from the perspective of both the global North and South. Making use of lectures, interactive dialogue, documentary films, and participatory experiential exercises, we will explore such themes as: Program Content: • Globalisation, climate change and peak oil • The roots of racial, ethnic, and religious conflict • Celebrity culture, personal identity and self-esteem • Redefining prosperity and progress • Economic revitalisation, both urban and rural • Business alliances for local economies • Why local food means global prosperity • Voluntary simplicity and other alternatives to consumerism • Healthcare in a life-based economy • The spiritual and psychological importance of connecting to nature and community Trainer: Helena Norberg Hodge Author and filmmaker Helena Norberg-Hodge is a pioneer of the ‘new economy’ movement, work that earned her the 2012 Goi Peace Prize. Through writing and public lectures on three continents, she has been promoting an economics of personal, social and ecological well being for more than thirty years. She is a widely respected analyst of the impact of the global economy on communities, local economies, and personal identity, and is a leading proponent of ‘localization’, or decentralization, as a means of countering those impacts. Helena is the founder and director of the International Society for Ecology and Culture. Based in the US and UK, with subsidiaries in Germany and Australia, ISEC examines the root causes of our current social and environmental crises, while promoting more sustainable and equitable patterns of living in both North and South.
