METUSAT
First time in METU history, “METUSAT” team participated in the 2014
ANNUAL CANSATE COMPETİTİON, student design build launch
competition organized by American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics (AIAA). The event is sponsored by NASA, Ball Aerospace &
Technologies Corp held at Burkett, Texas in 13-16 June 2014. The METU
team ranked 14th (http://www.cansatcompetition.com/2014_Winners.html).
METUSAT was advised by Prof.Dr. Ozan TEKINALP and mentored by Burak
YAĞLIOĞLU. The team members were students of Aerospace Engineering,
Computer Engineering, and Electric Electronics Engineering departments.
The primary missions were to transmit pressure, temperature, and altitude data
measured by the sensors on board, to send them to the ground station and to
return a sensitive payload to ground: A raw egg! During the competition the
CanSat was rocketed to 650 meters altitude and deployed. The payload, CanSat
was separated from the container module at the altitude of 500 meters while
descending from launch altitude. Unfortunately the separation of satellite from
the container module did not happen. However, the data transmission was
successfully completed the raw egg was recovered without damage.
