Abstract
The inkjet printing is rapidly becoming the leading technology for ceramic tiles decoration. It is a
common practice to protect the applied inkjet decoration with a transparent glaze to avoid
abrasion.The present study aimed to obtain a protection glaze based on Sr-Al-Si (Zn, Ba) glass
ceramic system. The good transparency, abrasion resistence and matt aspect of the glazed surface
was the main purpose of this work. In accordance with the above mentioned characteristics, several
frit formulations were prepared and melted at 1480°C for 1 h in laboratory furnace. The selected
compositions having appropriate thermal properties after heating microscope detection were melted in
industrial scale. Heating microscope results demonstrated a strong Sr(Ca,Mg)Al2Si2O8 crystallization
interval between 1000°C and 1140°C. The protection glaze prepared with the mentioned glass
ceramic frits was applied with low density and low weight on glazed porcelain tiles after digital printing
and fired in industrial kiln at 1175°C.The test results showed tiles resistant to abbrasion, stain, thermal
shock and chemical attacks without deformation.
