ME 472 - Engineering Metrology and Quality Control
Term Project Assignments (2014-2015 Fall Semester)
1. Nondestructive testing of welds: Common defects and problems in welds; Nondestructive Testing (NDT) methods
for welds such as visual inspection, liquid (dye) penetrant inspection, magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing,
radiographic testing, eddy current testing, etc.
2. Laser metrology: Definition of laser and related terminology; types of lasers and their classifications; LASER vs.
MASER; typical uses (e.g. encoders, interferometers, holography, spectroscopy, ablation, positioning, weapons,
etc.); applications in medical, metal cutting, military and aerospace industries.
3. X-Ray metrology: Definition of X-rays; principle of common techniques: Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy
(EDX, EDS, EDAX), Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (WDX, WDS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD);
typical uses (e.g. chemical composition analysis, stress measurements, etc.).
4. Use of sound in metrology: Brief introduction and some terminology (infrasound, acoustic, ultrasonic, supersonic,
hypersonic); SONAR systems; sonography and biomedical applications; ultrasonic NDT; miscellaneous applications
(cavitation, transducer systems, piezoelectricity, etc.)
5. Machine tool metrology: Geometrical (alignment) & practical (performance) tests for machine tools; conventional
versus advanced techniques for measurement and calibration in machine tool metrology; testing of machine tools
(such as lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, etc).
6. Coating thickness measurement: Coating thickness standards and thickness measurement methods; magnetic film
thickness gauges; eddy current; ultrasonic methods; destructive tests; gravimetric methods; optical (X-ray) methods.
7. Lean & Six Sigma methodologies: Concepts of Lean & Six Sigma; case studies on implementation of two
methodologies: Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) & Define-Measure-Analyze-Design-Verify
(DMADV, aka Design for Six Sigma - DFSS).
8. Ga(u)ge Repeatability & Reproducibility: Definition of repeatability and reproducibility; methods of Ga(u)ge
R&R such as range method, average and range method, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) method; a comprehensive
case study on Ga(u)ge R&R.
