The spinal cord
 Spinal nerves
innervate specific
regions of the body
– Attach to spinal cord
segments via two roots
• posterior - sensory
inputs
– Dorsal root ganglion
• anterior - motor outputs

Parts of a Reflex Arc
 Receptor:
sensitive to a
specific change
 Sensory
neuron:
transmits nerve
impulse from
the receptor to
brain or spinal
cord

Components of a reflex arc
 Reflex arc has five
components:
– receptor
– sensory neuron
– integration centre
– motor neuron
– Effector
• Somatic reflex –
skeletal muscle
• Autonomic reflex –
smooth muscle,
cardiac muscle or
gland

Stretch-gerilme refleksi ve
resiprok inhibisyon
Muscle spindle:stretch of muscle
spindle generates sensory
impulses
• excitation of agonist
• inhibition of antagonist

Tendon reflex
 Golgi tendon
organs detect
tension
– generate
sensory
impulses
• inhibition of
agonist
• excitation of
antagonists
– Can override
stretch reflex

Stretch Reflex : Patellar Tendon
Reflex : Monosynaptic Reflex

Flexor reflex
 Flexor reflex
– painful
stimulus
causes
withdrawal of
threatened
body part
– overrides
other signals
using same
pathways
