Sunday: lunch
✱
‘Your score ,’ the computer said, ‘is three thousand,
one hundred and fifty. This is the highest score ever.’
‘Of course it is,’ Philip said to his computer. ‘I can
play this game in my sleep. I’ve played it thousands of
times. I need some new games...’
‘Philip! Lunch!’ His mother always called Philip first.
That gave him time to turn off the computer. Then
she called his father. ‘Jim, Jim!’ Then his father
answered, ‘Coming, Penny.’ It was always the same.
His mother called again. ‘Viki, Alex, where are you?
Lunch time.’ Sundays never changed. The computer
screen went black.
The smell of cooked meat came from the kitchen.
Viki was already there, alone.
‘Viki should cut all that hair,’ Philip thought. ‘Then
people could believe she’s sixteen and not ten.’ She
was taking a piece of tomato from the big salad bowl
in the middle of the table.
He wanted to surprise her.
‘I saw you,’ he said loudly.
‘Mm...,’ she said with her mouth full. ‘It’s nice.’ She
smiled. ‘Try some. It’s good for you.’
‘I hate tomato,’ Philip said. He sat down in his usual
place at the table.
Viki sat opposite him.
